BATTING INTO his century, shipping doyen George Clarkson celebrated his 90th birthday at a function hosted by
the SA Association of Freight
Forwarders in Natal recently.
An active member of the association
during his long and eventful career, Clarkson joined African Shipping in 1926
at the age of 15 as a customs runner. He recalls that Dan Taylor and Benningfield (DTB Cartage) was at that stage African Shipping's appointed delivery
agent, using a horse and cart to
execute the task.
After active service in the war, he returned from Abyssinia to Bloemfontein where he became an instructor for
the SA Airforce before returning
to the freight industry.
A fitness fanatic and keen runner, Clarkson still exercises daily.
