THERE’S BEEN a big boost for MSC Logistics’ South African operation as it fully utilises the network of MSC Depots situated in all the major ports. According to MSC Logistics director Lawrie Bateman, his company has direct management control of certain of the depots in select areas – and has a close working association with all the others. “This,” he told FTW, “provides the flexibility that is required in controlling the movements of containers on both the import and export legs.” To supplement this, MSC Logistics has also made major investments in its trailer fleet. “This gives our owner-driver operation - involving local cartage - the necessary tools to support the logistical movements,” Bateman added. He also stressed that it should not be forgotten that – for the rest of southern Africa – the company has worked together with its principal, Mediterranean Shipping Company, for over 30 years. “This lengthy experience,” he said, “ensures that cargo is delivered to final destinations within our neighbouring countries. Focus here is on time and cost effectiveness.” It is a growing market, with MSC Logistics’ figures showing that the volumes it has been moving in 2006 are up on 2005 - especially in respect of Botswana and Zambia. “Although, as expected,” said Bateman, “Zimbabwe volumes have dropped. But we are more than satisfied with current movements considering the present situation there.”
