Cargo Handling Services
(CHS) has imported five
mobile container weighing
units at the port of Cape
Town in anticipation of
Safety of Life at Sea (Solas)
regulation verified gross
mass D-Day – which kicks
in today (1 July).
Managing director of
CHS, Owen Bottomley,
told FTW that the
company had set up
additional container scales
on the N3 to Durban at
Vaal Truck Inn and at
Belcon in Cape Town.
“We will be advising
Durban and Port Elizabeth
shortly,” he said.
He said the Solas
purpose-designed mobile
scales could be used while
the container was either on
the ground or still on the
trailer. “And weighing is
fast – taking five minutes –
from the time the equipment
is offloaded to weighing the
container,” said Bottomley.
