The Port of Cape Town will have a new truck staging area by no later than 2025. That’s according to Hlamalani Phephenyane, Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) planning and development manager in Cape Town, who said the project was currently in the pre-feasibility phase. She said extensions were currently under way at the port which would see the Cape Town Container Terminal capacity increased to 1.4 million TEUs. “The truck staging area will be within the port precinct and will accommodate the number of trucks required to handle two million TEUs.” Phephenyane said the area would be fully operational by 2025 but to ensure that the port was not disrupted it would not be constructed in one fell swoop. “Capacity will be released on a continuous basis as the project develops,” she said. According to a spokesman for the Cape Town Harbour Carriers’ Association this staging facility cannot come soon enough as truck congestion within the port is a major concern. “An area in which trucks can be parked and which has facilities for truck drivers such as ablutions is essential,” he said.
