Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) has confirmed that following early blockages at Pier 1 at Durban harbour earlier this week, “the truck staging areas of both container terminals remain busy but fluid”.
This follows a report earlier this week that the Bayhead area between South Coast Road and TPT’s facilities had “come to a standstill following heavy winds”.
Amid gale force winds howling at up to 60 kilometres an hour, social media reports also suggested that trucks were blocking access ways and that a collision and at least one broken down rig had contributed to a slowing of traffic in and out of port.
Durban Metro Police were subsequently called out to divert traffic elsewhere in attempts to ease congestion.
In a statement sent through to FTW Online late last night, TPT’s acting general manager for KwaZulu-Natal’s container region, Zamo Ngcobo, confirmed that weather-related issues had played havoc with traffic in the Bayhead region.
He said congestion had been experienced until Tuesday but that “the terminals were operational immediately thereafter”.
Since then container traffic at the Port of Durban had returned to manageable levels.
It was necessary to “set the record straight” if there were any perceptions that disruptions experienced earlier this week were still affecting container traffic, TPT said.
