Coal mine workers have called off their strike – for now.
They were expected to down tools on Sunday, November 19.
National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) spokesperson, Livhuwani Mammburu, told FTWO Online today (Friday) that the postponement was at the request of the Chamber of Mines who will be holding a plenary on Monday, November 20, in order to bring the latest wage offer by coal mining companies to the table.
NUM has demanded a once-off amount of R1 100 for 2017 and an 8% wage increase in 2018; however, mining companies previously made a final offer for an increase between 5.5% and 7.5%.
This led to wage negotiations collapsing between the union and the Chamber as neither party could reach an agreement and a strike certificate was awarded.
Mamburu added that depending on the offer they received on Monday, they would decide on whether or not to move forward with the strike.
