The first vehicles by Chinese car-maker BAIC are expected roll off the new R11-billion assembly plant early next year,
The plant, located near Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape, is projected to build 50 000 vehicles a year by 2022.
“We expect the first cars from the plant in the second quarter of next year,” said Sun Tongli, BAIC senior manager.
The assembly plant includes a paint and body shop but all parts will be imported and the majority of the cars are expected to be exported into Africa.
