Africa needs “sea corridors”
similar to the road corridors
in order to support growth
in intra-African trade,
according to Nozipho Mdawe,
secretary general of the Port
Management Association of
Eastern and Southern Africa
(PMAESA).
A start should be made
with smaller vessels moving
freight along the coastal
routes, which should be more
cost-effective than road or
rail, she told FTW.
An example is the export
of sugar from Swaziland to
Kenya by sea.
The question is why more
African countries aren’t buying
their sugar from Swaziland.
“In most cases as Africans
we trade outside Africa, but
there is an opportunity to
trade within the continent,”
she is quoted as saying in the
official PMAESA magazine.
