Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier, New Mykonos, broke into two and sank last week off the coast of Madagascar after being stranded for three months, online news sources report.
New Mykonos – which was carrying 160 000 tonnes of coal out of Richards Bay – ran aground on January 29, south of Faux Cap, southern Madagascar en route to Vizag, India.
The ship was currently lying in 25 metres of water and was almost fully submerged with an undisclosed portion of its cargo having spilled into the sea, reported shipping news publication, World Maritime News.
