Transporters heading to the Lebombo Border Post on the Maputo Corridor have been advised that Mozambique has requested that all transits from South Africa be stopped for the time being.
This is in order to allow Mozambique to deal with a blockage that has caused extreme congestion on the Ressano Garcia side of the border.
A clearing agent dealing with the primary crossing between the two countries told the Transit Assistance Bureau (Transist) that Mozambican border authorities had “requested us to block traffic from the South African side whilst unblocking the traffic from their side to allow movement”.
In footage shared on Transist’s WhatsApp group, trucks and other vehicles queuing three abreast can be seen stretching for kilometres east of the border.
In addition to the congestion, a broken-down truck close to the border has added to the congestion experienced in Mozambique.
It is not known when the blockage will be cleared or whether road hauliers from South Africa on the corridor are indeed being stopped.
