Following a series of troubles at the Nakonde-Tunduma border post – including revenue collection corruption, smuggling and under-invoicing of taxable imports – Zambian and Tanzanian authorities have signed an agreement to strengthen the security surveillance at the post and put an end to illegal trading activities
This was agreed during the sixth joint meeting of the permanent secretaries of Zambia and Tanzania held in Nakonde, Zambia over the weekend.
According to news reports the two parties indicated that there had been an escalation of illegal activities of late, including illegal money changing and counterfeiting activities.
The two governments have, according to The Times of Zambia, agreed to sensitise the cross-border traders to the issues and obtain their cooperation on curbing the fraud and corruption.
