While the height of poverty has always tended to be in the rural environments around the world, urban poverty is becoming significant.
In sub-Saharan Africa, for example, almost a quarter of all poverty is urban.
And, according to the IMF, the poorest countries in 2013 were Eritrea, Liberia, Burundi, Zimbabwe and, in bottom spot, the Democratic Republic of Congo.
And the 10 poorest cities in the world are also all African.
The UN’s City Prosperity Index showed the Bottom 10 poorest as: Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) at No 10, Dakar (Senegal) at No 9 and Harare (Zimbabwe) at No 8.
Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) is No 7, while Lusaka (Zambia) is No 6.
West African capitals dominate the bottom five. Niamey in Niger (5), Bamako in Mali (4), Antananarivo in Madagascar (3) and Conakry in Guinea (2).
But what has the UN has identified as the poorest city in the world?
Monrovia, the capital of Liberia.
