The head of Ireland's largest fruit and vegetable producers, Begley Brothers, has just received a jail term of six years after being caught involved in a garlic scam worth 1.6 million euro, reports freshplaza.com.
According to the report, the fraud involved the labelling of 1 000 tonnes of Chinese garlic as apples to avoid hefty duty payments.
The import duty on garlic is up to 232% while apples attract an import duty of only 9%.
