At the Maputo toll-gate, at the start of the motorway, the toll for light vehicles and motorcycles rises from 17.5 to 20 meticais, an increase of 14.3% (at current exchange rates, there are about 27.1 meticais to the US dollar), reports The Mozambique Investor.
There are four other tolls, depending on the size of the vehicle. For the heaviest trucks, with five or more axles, the toll rises by 15%, from 174 to 200 meticais.
At the second toll-gate, in Moamba district, the increases are nearer 10%. Light vehicles will now pay 125 instead of 95 meticais, and the toll for heavy trucks rises from 707 to 780 meticais.
The toll increases do not affect registered buses and minibuses used for passenger transport, which benefit from a discount negotiated with TRAC.
Many users of the road complain that TRAC is no longer making significant investments in maintaining and improving the motorway on the Mozambiquan side of the border, which contrasts with the SA side, where the road is in noticeably better condition.
