Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) has announced that its North Corridor delivered 1,413 million tonnes (mt) of export cargo, marking its “most substantial performance” in terms of volumes moved this financial year.
This included moving 11 chrome trains, and 1,182mt of export coal for the Richards Bay Coal Terminal, TFR said in a statement on Tuesday.
“This achievement not only sets the record for the highest volume reached this financial year but also signifies a remarkable enhancement from the previous record of 1,403mt, established in week 13,” TFR said.
The rail utility said these latest volumes had also established a new benchmark for the number of trains run within a single week during the current financial year.
TFR North Corridor acting managing executive, Theo Johnson, said week 53 had marked “a definitive moment” for the corridor.
“This achievement is the result of the unwavering efforts of our employees and our stakeholders, both labour and our customers, who have worked safely and relentlessly every day. We are exceedingly proud of this success. This milestone paves the way for the North Corridor to reclaim its former glory,” said Johnson.
TFR chief executive, Russell Baatjies said the milestone was a “definitive demonstration of our collective capability” that served as the motivation for sustained excellence and growth across the entity.
“This accomplishment is a pivotal step in our journey of rebuilding and recovery, affirming that we are on the correct path. I want to express my profound appreciation to the North Corridor team and all our stakeholders for their exceptional dedication and effort,” said Baatjies.
A series of operational enhancements introduced on the North Corridor, including increased availability of rolling stock and enhanced safety measures to prevent theft and vandalism, had contributed positively to its performance outcomes, said TFR.
