The Cape Town Container Terminal (CTCT) recorded the highest number of refrigerated containers ever loaded on a single vessel when Vessel Santa Rita sailed to Europe with South Africa’s deciduous fruit exports this week.
Port workers loaded a total of 1 726 refrigerated containers on to the Santa Rita, breaking the previous record of 1 711 in 2021.
“This milestone is a combination of all our efforts and confirmation that our ramp up plans are heading towards the right direction,” said Transnet Port Terminals Western Cape acting managing executive, Oscar Borchards.
“In order to handle both season requirements and ensure efficiency, the Cape Town Container Terminal had to develop a recovery plan. The terminal is receiving support across all spheres of the Transnet business, from the team here at the terminal all the way to board level,” he said.
CTCT is still at the peak of the deciduous fruit season, which finishes at the end of March. The terminal currently has three vessels on berth, two at anchor with volumes of 16 115 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) planned for loading this week.
Borchards said the terminal had embarked on “collaborative efforts” to resolve the port’s challenges as a collective.
“Communication with all our stakeholders remains at the core of what we do with captains of industry,” said Borchards.
