Thanks to the swift action of several specialised SA Police Services units, illicit cigarettes and tobacco products with a street value of approximately R10 million were seized last week.
The Northern Cape Organised Crime Investigation Unit together with the National Crime Intelligence Unit and Kimberley K9 Unit conducted a search at a storage container facility in Memorial Road in Kimberley after receiving information regarding the storage of illicit goods at the facility.
Three storage containers were identified and searched. Police recovered 764 boxes of illicit cigarettes and 53 boxes of hookah flavour. Additional members from the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations, Kimberley Crime Prevention Unit and Crime Intelligence joined the search and seizure operation to secure the scene and safekeeping of the exhibits.
Members of Bloemfontein Customs were expected in Kimberley on Friday to verify the goods. No one has been arrested.
