In an industry long perceived as male-dominated, women are breaking barriers and carving their path to success. The freight sector's growth has been undeniable, but the narrative of male dominance doesn't tell the whole story. Beyond the traditional male-dominated roles, women have been making significant strides in finance, marketing, human resources, and various other structures that underpin this thriv ing sector."Change is happening right now," says Ilodi Ras, one of two female managing directors at Forte Supply Chain Solutions. "Women have so much to offer in this industry, and it's high time that we shatter these preconceived notions and showcase our potential."Her colleague Anthea van Breemen agrees, saying many initiatives are ongoing, encouraging women to choose the freight sector as a career option. "Not only that, but we are seeing more awareness and initiatives encouraging new skills into the sector – and a younger demographic than before. With the technological advances and partnerships required for robust supply chains, the industry is evolving from what it looked like even five years ago."While more can be done to encourage women to obtain the correct degrees in training to enter the industry, the freight sector is attracting more women than ever before.Van Breemen points out that, in line with numerous other sectors, the freight industry is swiftly adapting to accommodate the preferences of the younger workforce seeking greater work-life balance and f lexibility through hybrid work arrangements. The appeal of f lexibility, in particular, resonates across all genders and is now a key consideration for most employees when evaluating potential job opportunities,"The days of physical strength being a requirement are long gone; nowadays, technology and adaptability are at the forefront of a skilled workforce. While there are definite strides to be made, like most other industries, the freight sector hires for skill, perseverance, and adaptability – all key elements in a changing environment."Ras is encouraged by the progressively diverse workforce within the freight industry."It is indeed heartening to witness a growing number of women now occupying the top management and executive positions. This transformation represents a stark departure from the landscape of a decade ago and serves as a powerful testament to the expanding career opportunities for women in the freight industry."
