Marseille-run ocean carrier, CMA CGM, has announced plans to increase container terminal capacity at its facilities in the Port of New York and New Jersey.
This comes after the French shipping line acquired Global Containers Terminals (GCT) and its facilities in New Jersey and New York, labelling them its “flagship terminal operations at a critical entry point on the US East Coast.”
CMA CGM announced the finalisation of the acquisition on August 31, saying that it plans to further develop the terminals as the company entrenches its position as a global port terminal operator.
The company’s two multi-use terminals in Bayonne and Staten Island, have the capacity to handle approximately two million TEUs annually.
CMA CGM said it would continue the development of Bayonne’s Berth 3 which will have a 55-foot depth with the capacity to handle 18 000 TEU vessels as part of a larger expansion to increase terminal capacity by 50% over the next ten years.
This will include the creation of additional yard and berth capacity and investment in improving road and rail access to the terminals.
According to US data the two ports have handled the greatest number of containers over the past few months.
In July, NY/NJ’s volume rose 16% to 725 479 TEU.
Southern California ports have recorded ongoing declines in monthly volume, while Los Angeles hit just over 674 000 TEU and Long Beach handled 578 000 TEU in July.
CMA CGM now owns seven US terminals. The line’s acquisition of GCT was announced in December 2022.
