Volumes from Zimbabwe through the Port of Beira are on the increase, boding well for the overall growth of the corridor.According to a spokesman for Cornelder de Moçambique, the Port of Beira has continued to be the primary channel for connecting Zimbabwe to the global market.“Volumes have been growing extensively over the past few years. Growth of 56% has been seen in tobacco, and 25.5% growth in granite exports. There has been an increase in both containerised and general cargo volumes,” said the spokesman. The port has been on an extensive drive to prepare for the increased volumes, more particularly to handle the expanding lithium production in Zimbabwe. “In 2022 we already saw an increase in volumes of the mineral.”Beira has also been key to economic and infrastructural development efforts in Zimbabwe, through a significant increase of over 500% in project cargo and equipment volumes compared to 2021, handling various cargoes from piping to heavy-duty vehicles, the spokesman added.
