A port worker was killed after a pier collapsed under a crane at the Keppel Shipyard in the Tuas area of Singapore this week.
Maritime Executive reported that a rail-mounted crane had fallen into the water when a pier collapsed adjacent to the newly built FPSO Prosperity, currently under construction for SBM Offshore. The crane's base fell vertically down into the water without toppling and the boom draped over the top of the FPSO's superstructure.
“Several workers sustained minor injuries in the collapse and two went into the water. One was rescued shortly after, but one man was left missing. The remains of the second individual, a Bangladeshi national employed by a Singapore-based subcontractor, were recovered on Wednesday by the Singapore Civil Defence Force after an extended search,” the publication reported.
Keppel Shipyard confirmed the incident in a brief statement.
“We can confirm that an incident occurred yesterday at Keppel Shipyard in Tuas where a section of the quayside gave way causing two workers to fall into the sea and a crane to tilt to the side," the firm said.
The shipyard extended its condolences to the worker’s family and said it was cooperating with the government’s ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Singapore's Ministry of Manpower issued a stop-work order for the pier as the government investigates the collapse.
This latest accident comes after two workers were killed in an earlier incident at the Keppel yard in March after a structure on a vessel's topsides collapsed, hurtling them onto the pier.
