The eThekwini Municipality Maritime Cluster has launched a survey to assess the extent of flood damage to local businesses in the sector to inform its decisions regarding the city’s recovery process.
The municipality has called on all businesses in the maritime sector to participate.
eThekwini Maritime Cluster spokesperson Ngcebo Nxumalo told Freight News on Wednesday that the survey was extremely important to help the municipality to quantify the extent of damages and financial losses.
“As the eThekwini Maritime Cluster we are concerned about the state of the KZN community and would like to convey our deepest condolences to all the KZN people who were affected by the floods,” Nxumalo said.
“The impact survey is directed to all our stakeholders, for the purpose of assisting the eThekwini Municipality quantify damage extent caused by the recent heavy rainfalls. The survey is of high importance to quantifying the loss to the eThekwini Municipality GDP and this will exclude the replacement value of properties which will be in multiple billion of rands.”
He said the survey focused mainly on real estate, disruption to operations, loss of revenue and job losses.
Distributed to businesses via email on April 16, it noted that the municipality was “seeking to understand the impact of flooding on maritime sector businesses”. It asked business managers and owners who had experienced physical impact due to the floods to complete the survey to support its decision making.
