Transport created the most jobs of any sector in the second quarter of 2018 compared to the first quarter.
South Africa’s unemployment rate increased by 0.5% in the second quarter of 2018 in comparison to the first, according to data released by Statistics South Africa.
The only increases in employment were in transport (54 000), construction (45 000), mining (38 000), private households (22 000) and utilities (18 000).
The unemployment rate increase to 27.1% from 26.7%, means a rise in the number of unemployed people from 4.4 million in the first quarter to 6 million in the second.
This is made up of a loss of 90 000 jobs and an increase in the working age population by 154 000.
The expanded unemployment rate increased by 0.5% in Q2: 2018 to 37.2% quarter-to-quarter, with the Eastern Cape having the highest unemployment rate of 45.8%.
Additionally, youth unemployment was significantly higher (33.8%) than adults (17.9%).
The unemployment rate among the youth for graduates was recorded at 30.6%, showing a decrease of 2.9%, while those with a matric certificate had an unemployment rate of 53.6% and those with less than matric a rate of 56.9%.
