The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) will launch new mobility package vehicles in Pongola, KwaZulu Natal, to improve protection at borders across the country.
In 2009 Cabinet approved the re-deployment of the SANDF in the role of border protection, previously the task of the South African Police Service, and planners then began with vehicle designs to meet the terrain demands at the borders.
“After considering all facts, a high mobility cross-country vehicle that provides a relatively small force that can easily manoeuvre to effectively cope with the situation at hand was developed,” said SANDF joint operations chief, lieutenant-general Barney Hlatshwayo.
The initial roll-out of the vehicles will start at the KwaZulu Natal-Mozambique border, followed by the Mpumalanga-Mozambique and Limpopo-Zimbabwe borders.
