The licences of 24 private and public Vehicle Testing Stations (VTS’s) in Gauteng have been suspended, according to MEC for Roads and Transport, Ismail Vadi.
“The 24 testing stations have failed to comply with relevant regulations relating to the installation of play detectors and wheel mass meters capable of being linked to brake testers,” he said yesterday (Thursday).
Vadi pointed out that the suspension of licences was a necessary action to ensure road safety was improved and that tested vehicles were in roadworthy condition, adding that the department would be willing to lift the suspensions once the VTS’s could prove that the required equipment had been installed.
The stations suspended include: Global Clearwater, Global Mayfair, Motorcity, Booysens, Orlando, Global Martindale, Global Vereeniging, Kenmare 2, Gauteng, Global Autocity, River Park, Global Edenvale, Roete 23, VTS SA PTA West, Global Randburg, Meyerton, Vereeniging, Vanderbijlpark, Sandton, Randburg, Waltloo, Careltonville, Centurion and Heidelberg.
The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport will now commence with Phase 2 of its operations which will involve the physical inspections of another 52 registered VTS’s in the province.
“This implies that additional non-complying VTS’s may be suspended in the future,” said department spokesperson, Melitah Madiba.
