WITH ACTIVITIES in full swing along the new quay in Luderitz Bay harbour, Namport has brought in a range of equipment to streamline operations.
These include a side-loader, reach-stacker, 45 ton forklift and a 64 ton mobile crane to handle ship to shore cargo.
“This equipment allows for flexibility and mobility of operations in the port and has led to improved productivity, helping to put Luderitz on the map as a world class port,” says Namport’s marketing manager Jerome Mouton.
These developments were timed to coincide with the new mining activities in southern Namibia and with direct fuel imports through
the port.
In addition to the warehouse which has been erected to accommodate stock from the new Skorpion mine, a cargo stacking area and access road have also been opened.
New container and breakbulk handling equipment will be provided. The 20/40 foot side-loader will also cater for the requirements of 40 foot reefer containers.
The port handles in excess of 200 000 tons of cargo annually and now receives an average of 150 vessel calls per month.
