CONSTRUCTION OF the new coastal road linking KwaZulu Natal with the Mozambican border at Ponta do Ouro will begin in August, according to the KZN Department of Transport.
The new road, part of the so-called Lubombo Initiative, will cost R180 million and will shorten the route between Durban and Richards Bay and Maputo. Although the road has been targeted for its tourism potential, it appears likely that road transporters will quickly realise its advantages over the existing route through Swaziland.
At the moment the only roads into the area are sandy tracks that are recommended for four-by-four vehicles only.
