A WELL-KNOWN name disappears from the front-line of the shipping industry as Tony Farr relinquishes the reins as m.d. of Safmarine and chief executive of holding company Safren.
Farr's announcement coincides with the assumption by the Danish A P Moller Group of full management control of Safmarine Container Lines (SCL).
Having joined Safmarine in 1966 - in the bushy-tailed days when it reigned supreme as SA's national flag carrier - Farr was appointed m.d. in 1989. Added to a distinguished career with Safmarine he also played important roles as chief executive of SAECS (SA Europe Container Service) and chairman of ESAC (Europe Southern Africa Conference).
He will not be entirely lost to the shipping industry, maintaining background roles as non-executive chairman of the local board of Safmarine (an SCL subsidiary), and as non-executive director of Maersk SA.
Farr will also retain his appointments as chairman of the Western Cape advisory board of the Standard Bank; director of Standard; and a member of the University of Cape Town council.
The new Mr Safmarine - who now has custody of the Safmarine brand - is Howard Boyd, c.e.o. of SCL (See
page 16).
