Thungela Resources has established a marketing arm in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to market its South African and Australian coal production worldwide.
To be named Thungela Marketing International (TMI), the Dubai office would be responsible for a “broad range of marketing functions catering to both the South African and Australian assets”, the company said yesterday.
The sales company has been established in partnership with the emirate’s Dubai Multi Commodity Centre Authority.
The move provides further momentum to the Johannesburg-listed entity’s intentions to diversify its operations internationally. In 2023 it completed the R4.1-billion acquisition of Ensham, a mine in Queensland, Australia.
Thungela chief executive officer, July Ndlovu, said of the move: “This is a key milestone towards fulfilling one of our strategic objectives – to create future diversification options.”
He added that TMI gave it access to seaborne markets and helped it to strengthen relationships with its clients.
“Our presence in Dubai is testament to the steps we are taking to realise geographic diversification and become a key player in the international market,” Ndlovu added.
