Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) has made "significant progress" in restoring operations on the coal line to Richards Bay after a train derailed, the state-owned entity said on Wednesday.
TFR stated that a train loaded with 49 wagons en route to Richards Bay, derailed on the North Corridor line at the Mqwabe Bypass, between Dumbe and Vryheid.
The cause of the derailment remains unclear at this stage and is the subject of a TFR investigation.
"No injuries were reported, and operations continued on the line with only a 50% reduction as a result of the derailment," TFR said.
"All wagons have since been cleared, and the line has been handed over to the rail network unit for formation activities."
TFR said that weather conditions permitting, the estimated time for the repairs to be completed and the line to be reopened, is Wednesday, 17 May.
"The cause of the derailment will be determined once investigations have been finalized," TFR said.
