Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) is taking significant steps to enhance its manganese capacity.
Through the extension of the Mamathwane crossing loop, an impressive 1.5 million tonnes of additional capacity will be established.
This development has the potential to generate extra revenue for TFR and secure approximately R4.4 billion in foreign earnings.
As of now, TFR utilizes the Mamathwane crossing loop located in the Northern Cape.
However, plans are in place to complete the expansion of this loop by the end of July.
The primary objective of this construction project is to enhance operational efficiency and introduce an estimated 1.5 million tonnes of supplementary capacity.
It is anticipated that this expansion initiative will boost manganese volumes by six million tonnes by the year 2027/28.
The expansion of the loop will facilitate optimal slot utilization between Sishen and Hotazel, enabling the transportation of additional trains.
Presently, TFR operates 104-wagon trains to Gqberha (Port Elizabeth) and 125-wagon trains to Saldanha.
Nevertheless, with the extension, an extra four trains per week will be accommodated, further augmenting TFR's operational capabilities.
