The City of Johannesburg recorded a substantial reduction in the average downtime of traffic lights daily during the 2016/17 financial year (ended June) according to MMC for Transport, councillor Nonhlanhla Makhuba.
A statement released by the city yesterday (Tuesday) noted that average traffic light downtime was reduced by 55% due to an 18% decline in the average number of daily traffic light faults and a 60% improvement in the average time taken to repair faults.
This was due to the additional R6 million allocated to the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) as well as the implementation of the city’s ‘No Joints Policy’. The No Joints Policy was aimed at doing away with the joining of old cables once a fault was reported and instead replacing them with new cables.
Currently 89 intersections have been re-cabled and are now joint-free.
The No Joints Policy aims to reduce congestion on the roads of Johannesburg.
