The Saldanha Multi-Purpose Terminal (MPT) is playing a strategic role in discharging imported wind turbine components that will be used in the construction of wind farm installations in the Western Cape
Transnet said in a statement on Thursday that the terminal had completed discharging the first consignment of 31 wind turbine components as part of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program project announced by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy in November 2022.
The venture aims to aid the country’s ongoing electricity shortage.
Western Cape managing executive Andiswa Dlanga said: “The strategic nature of the cargo not only brings new volumes and revenue to the Saldanha MPT but further highlights the business’s capability to handle an array of specialised commodities, facilitating diverse trade for South Africa.
“Transnet is also proud to be part of a project promoting the use of renewable energy source technologies by the public and private sectors that will ultimately contribute to a more sustainable South Africa.”
The next consignment is expected to arrive at Saldanha MPT in November, with the anticipated project completion date being early next year.
