Tipper truck driver, Sithulile Siyabonga Nhlanhlayethu Zulu (22) appeared in the Durban Magistrates' Court on Wednesday in connection with the multi-vehicle accident on the M41 (east-bound) highway near Umhlanga.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, said the driver had appeared in court to face charges after he ran away from the scene of the accident that occurred at 8am on Monday morning. According to witnesses at the scene, the brakes of runaway truck allegedly failed, and he ploughed into rush hour traffic, involving at least 36 vehicles in the crash.
“Zulu is charged with reckless and negligent driving and failure to comply with the duties of a driver following an accident,” Ramkisson-Kara said.
The matter was remanded to 15 March 2023 for bail information.
