The Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) NATCOR Channel – which operates the railway line that stretches from Rietvlei in Gauteng to the port of Durban – broke its monthly tonnage record during the month of September.
The NATCOR Channel railed a total of 1 305 167 tons, smashing its previous best monthly of 1 268 004 tons, which was achieved during the 2016/17 financial year.
The month of September also resulted in a record high for the Container and Automotive Business (CAB) unit, where it achieved a record high of 69 869 TEUs beating the 68 436 TEUs achieved in August 2017; as well as a record high of 41 939 NATCOR TEUs, also exceeding the previous best of 41 535 achieved last month..
The export COAL line also achieved a new record of 7 215 million tons (mt), surpassing the August 2017 record of 7 139mt. This has resulted in export coal achieving the highest ever midyear record of 37 795 212 mt.
“These record breaking performances can be attributed to the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders and given the unfavourable economic climate this is no mean feat,” said TFR spokesperson, Mike Asefovitz.
