Gauteng MEC for roads and transport, Ismail Vadi, launched a R158-million road construction project for the D1944 last week.
North-east of Pretoria, the 11.5-kilometre gravel stretch of road will be tarred and culverts (open drains beneath the road) will be reconstructed. The project will also include the building of two bridges and placing of road markings, signage and bus shelters along the route.
“This project will provide for better economic linkages and mobility between Gauteng and Limpopo province and is scheduled to be completed over the next 18 months,” said Vadi. He added that some of the benefits of constructing this road would be a reduction in travel time, enhanced road safety and improved transportation of people and goods.
