A FINAL DECISION on where the Lowveld's international airport is to be sited remains in the balance following a high court decision, taken in Pretoria last week, that Primkop's application must be reconsidered.
Previously the Mpumalanga government had approved the Kruger Park International Airport (KPIA) application, under which the existing Nelspruit airport would also be restructured as a local airport server.
In the Pretoria High Court, Judge Nico Coetzee ruled that the decision was 'unconstitutional' and set it aside, with the government and KPIA ordered to pay all legal costs.
It is the first ruling by a provincial government that has been set aside by
the Supreme Court, says Primkop's legal representative Kallie Erasmus.
Now, he says, the Mpumalanga government will have to listen to the Primkop proposal again.
I don't think this will cause any delay for KPIA, says head of the latter company, Izak Fick.
It is a pity that after five years the world still does not know what is happening regarding an international airport for the Lowveld. I am confident we will still get the full go-ahead.
