Online auction house WH Auctioneers will auction off 13 AFRO4000 locomotives which were initially acquired for the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) commuter network.
The locomotives are being auctioned off by Swifambo Rail Leasing.
The leasing company was awarded a R3.5-billion contract in 2012 to supply Prasa with 70 locomotives.
Swifambo, which is now in liquidation, delivered only 13 of the 70 locomotives after receiving payment of R2.6 billion.
It was later reported that the locomotives that Prasa received were too tall to operate on its network.
According to the advertisement, the trains can be viewed at Prasa depots across the country.
Bids for the trains are open between 1 and 12 September.
