P&O NEDLLOYD has invested a further R25 million in controlled atmosphere (CA) EverFresh containers that will be dedicated to serving the South African avocado export market to Europe.
The purchase of additional 40ft CA containers supplements the company's initial investment in EverFresh earlier this year, all of which are locked into the line's European service.
The South African Avocado Growers Association (SAAGA) has reported the second biggest export volume in the history of the industry. Some 10,6 million cartons of avocados were exported to Europe during the past avocado season, more than 90% of it moving in CA containers.
Avocado volumes have steadily increased since 1996, but the volumes are reaching a plateau, according to SAAGA. The industry aims to have more control over weekly volumes reaching European markets, which can only absorb a certain volume of avocados per week. To oversupply themarket causes stock build-up resulting in quality and price problems.
