INCREASING GLOBAL demands for air freight has provided South African Airways with an unexpected R3 billion windfall. There is a worldwide call for ageing Airbus A300s to be converted to freighters - and SAA has eight of them.
Their current value has risen from R50 million to around R84 million per aircraft. With SAA renewing its fleet at present, they can sell off the 'oldies' following an announcement by Airbus Industries at the Paris Air Show last week that Africa alone would require 254 of these aircraft in the next 20 years. Many of the older aircraft are not allowed to use European airports because of noise and pollution limitations - but everywhere else, says Airbus, want them desperately.
