On 09 November 2024, the World Trade Organization (WTO) advised that Ambassador Petter Ølberg of Norway, Chair of the General Council, had notified Members that no further nominations for the position of WTO Director-General (DG) had been received by the deadline of 08 November 2024 and that the incumbent DG, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, is, therefore, the sole candidate for the role.
The WTO DG confirmed her willingness to serve a second four-year term in the role in a letter to the Chair on 16 September 2024. On 08 October 2024, the WTO formally commenced the process of appointing its next DG, with Members given until 08 November 2024 to submit nominations.
The Chair of the General Council will communicate the next steps in this process in the coming days. The General Council Chair led the process in accordance with the WTO’s “Procedures for the Appointment of Directors-General”.
The WTO DG’s current term ends on 31 August 2025.
