The roll-out by Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) of a new service instruction entry (SIE) automated system at the Durban Ro-Ro Terminal has attracted positive industry response. The Toyota vessel – Guangzhou Highway – was the first to use the system at the Durban Ro-Ro Terminal. TPT general manager: KZN operations, bulk, breakbulk and cars, Amanda Siyengo, said that the manual system had run concurrently with the new automated process to validate new processes and ensure a smooth transition. “The main objective of the new system is to reduce processing time from the current 72 hours to less than 24 hours, as well as extend vehicle delivery times to the terminal through document optimisation,” she said. TPT anticipates the smooth roll-out of its SIE automated service at the East London Car Terminal and, thereafter, the Port Elizabeth Car Terminal by mid-2018.
