A new freight rail service is operating new routes linking Maputo Port in Mozambique, to Zimbabwe’s three key trade hubs.
Unitrans Africa, in partnership with national Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ), Mozambique Ports and Railways (CFM) and Traxtion are operating the railway service. Traxtion bought seven Afro4000 diesel locomotives at an auction at Prasa, in South Africa, and is providing them to the operation’s trains, which run from port to hubs in Harare, Bulawayo and Gweru.
The service aims to facilitate connections between importers, exporters and the Port of Maputo, which provides a multi-purpose deep-water port which can create connections between customers and global trade partners.
Unitrans claims the services contributes to the company’s goal to create sustainable growth in Sun-Saharan Africa, and furthermore encourages growth and opportunities focusing on Public Private Partnerships on the continent.
“As well as promoting new trade opportunities for customers in both Zimbabwe and Maputo, this dedicated rail service will reduce transit times, cut costs and offer a more reliable service,” said Rob Hayworth, The CEO of Unitrans.
