Mozambique has a brand new cashew nut processing factory in Palma in the Cabo Delgado province in the north of the country.This is good news for the province, which has been plagued by bad news following an Islamic insurgency in 2021.The facility, which represents an investment of approximately $1.3 million, will serve as a base for the Sunshine Nut Co, which has announced its intention to expand significantly all over the conf lict region of this northern province.The shelling factory consists of a 165 000-tree nursery, a model farm, a training centre, a 1 250-metric-ton processing facility, and staff residences. It has the potential to employ up to 100 people and the capacity to process 1 500 tons of cashew nuts per year. It will serve cashew producers in the districts of Nangade, Mueda, Mocímboa da Praia, Muidumbe and Palma.Sunshine Nut Co, which is vertically integrated from the farm level all the way to the consumer, continuously invests in its facilities in Mozambique. It also has a factory in Beluluane in the Maputo Province where an upgrade and extension of the facility was completed in December last year. In June, the construction of a new warehouse was completed.In Muchenguentava in the Gaza province, the company has a newly completed model village factory which operates in a completely off-grid environment.
