Mozambican cement giant, Dugongo Cimentos, has announced that it will be constructing a $192 million plant in Nacala-Porto in Nampula Province.
Once completed, the plant, which will provide 600 new jobs, is expected to produce 6000 tonnes of cement per day.
The plant’s output will be more than twice the daily capability of Dugongo’s current facility in Maputo.
It is situated south of Pemba, the principal port for shipments heading north to Mozambique’s liquid natural gas (LNG) extraction fields in Cabo Delgado province, and news of the cement plant is yet more confirmation of the LNG’s developmental spread.
What remains to be seen is how Mozambique intends to fill in the dots, especially with regard to logistical linkages between industrial infrastructure projects like Nacala-Porto, Pemba, and the Rovuma region on the Tanzanian border where LNG exploration is under way.
