Tobacco exports from Malawi showed a year-on-year crop increase in 2023 of 55% compared to that of 2022 – the largest on record according to agriculture minister, Sam Kawale.
The country’s tobacco season has just ended, and figures show that Malawi sold 120.5 million kilogrammes, earning $282 618.
In 2022, export sales of 85 million kilogrammes earned $182m.
This year’s tobacco yield represents an increase of 55% year-on-year.
In 2023, the leaf had an average price of $2.35 per kilogramme, an improvement on the $2.14 per kilogramme that “green gold” sold for in 2022.
Malawi’s raw tobacco exports are mainly destined for Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, Ukraine and South Africa.
