A local canned food company has secured a deal to supply American retail giant Walmart with three variations of premium quality canned pears as part of a new export programme implemented by South African firm, Massmart.
The Krugersdorp-based, Rhodes Food Group has been awarded a deal to export 425g and 850g cans of pear slices in heavy syrup, as well as 425g cans of pear halves in juice.
Massmart chief executive Mitchell Slape said that this would be the first of many similar deals that the company will try to secure for local suppliers and exporters.
Rhodes Food Group will be the second local supplier to be listed with Walmart as part of Massmart’s export programme.
Seven other suppliers, including I&J seafood, AVI Fresh Pack rooibos, Vinimark wines, Rhodes Foods’ tinned fruit, Distell wines, Green Farms’ macadamia nuts and Glenart’s Christmas crackers have also been identified as possible export partners following visits to their farms in January 2020. – Bjorn Vorster
