Amid allegations of shadowy dealings still surfacing, fresh information keeps coming through about the violent death last week of a prominent KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) businessman, Nkululeko Mkhize.
Mkhize, who had been exposed for mafia-style tender dealings with Transnet, was killed in a shootout with police at his home in the luxury Zimbali Estate near Ballito on the KZN north coast, along with another unidentified man.
The incident followed the shooting of five people in Richards Bay the previous day, leading police to the Zimbali residence.
Mkhize, is described as "feared" in Richard's Bay and Empangeni, and had a reputation for wealth and lavish spending, often gifting large sums of cash at events.
In one of his living-large moments, Mkhize notoriously caught the limelight in 2021 when he gave a bride-to-be R1.5 million in cash at a traditional “indishi” (Zulu gift and feast ceremony) in 2021.
Police found six firearms and over 1 000 rounds of ammunition at the scene Mkhize’s fatal shooting.
Transnet has yet to release a formal statement following last week’s shootout.
