On 30 August 2023, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) announced that tariff subheading 0507.10 now requires a Threatened or Protected Species (TOPS) and Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) permit from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) Department of Environment for Import and Export.
The tariff subheading explanation:
- Chapter 5: Products of Animal Origin, not Elsewhere Specified or Included
- Tariff Heading 05.07: Ivory, tortoiseshell, whalebone and whalebone hair, horns, antlers, hooves, nails, claws and beaks, unworked or simply prepared but not cut to shape; powder and waste of these products
