The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has continued to battle the blaze that broke out aboard the Maersk-chartered container vessel which claimed the life of one crew member a week ago.
The ICG reported on social media platform X that it was still tackling sporadic fires in containers on the Panama-flagged Maersk Frankfurt on Thursday.
This was after a helicopter dropped 200 kilograms of dry powder onto the burning containers in a bid to quench the flames.
The coast guard said its firefighting efforts were being gradually supplemented by assistance from the shipowner.
The fire broke out after an explosion aboard while it was sailing from Mundra to Colombo on July 19.
Maersk confirmed that one crew member had been killed in the fire, while the Panama Maritime Authority reported earlier this week that it was impossible to recover the body on the lashing bridge due to the fire.
It is unknown at this stage what caused the explosion and fire although local media reports have indicated that it was due to a short circuit on the vessel.
Tokei Kaiun Ltd owns the 2024-built ship which is managed by Bernard Schulte Shipmanagement.
